Committee on Social
Inclusion and Participative Democracy

Chair: Ricard Gomà, Deputy-Mayor of Barcelona, Spain

Uniting cities for social inclusion

The Committee on Social Inclusion and Participative Democracy, chaired by Ricard Gomà, Deputy Mayor of Barcelona (Spain), aims to encourage the exchange of experiences on social inclusion policies in cooperation with the organized civil society. The UCLG Committee brings together the cities that have been active in the Forum of Local Authorities for Social Inclusion (FAL) established in 2001 during the World Social Forum.

Key issues for social inclusion and participative democracy

The Committee encourages debate and exchanges of experiences between its members on subjects such as participative democracy, development of programmes for social inclusion, promotion of social justice, public services for the defence and protection of cities, democratization of the media, global citizenship, human rights and immigration, and strengthening relationships between organized and strengthened civil society and local authorities.

Supporting the exchange of innovative social inclusion policies between cities

The Committee aims to analyse the concept of social inclusion, create a database of innovative city experiences and policies, and develop indicators to evaluate impact of social inclusion within cities. It particularly focuses on looking at how Objective 1 of the MDGs on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger is being implemented by cities.
