Accutane is a vitamin A pill, allowing you to reduce the amount of oil produced by glands located in the skin. Due to this, you skin feels fresh and young again. This drug is used for the treatment of acne and other skin problems.

How it acts?

Accutane acts by decreasing the release of facial oil, also called “sebum”. It allows you to refresh your skin in a very short period. Moreover, it reduces the speed the skin produces skin cells inside the pore, which prevents them from clogging.

Use

Accutane is used for the treatment of serious nodular acne (also called “cystic acne”). The medicines can also cure certain type of cancer known as neuroblastoma. It shrinks oil glands, decreases acne bacteria, prevents inflammation and to impedes clogging.

Dosage

The average daily dosage is 0.5 to 1.0 mg/kg/day, which must be divided into two intake and taken with meal for 4-5 months. The dosage can be changed depending on the patient’s reaction to the drug or the emergence of severe adverse effects.

If you take Accutane on an empty stomach, it can decrease the drug absorption and cause undesirable complications. The treatment can be stopped if the total nodule count has been decreased by at least 70%.

The drug provides initial clearing of acne, but you should remember that it may become worse during the first days of treatment. It may take from 4 to 8 weeks to see significant improvement. Avoid taking this drug longer than necessary.

Adverse effects

The most common adverse effects include:

pain in the joints,
depression,
fatigue,
loose bowels,
vertigo,
fever,
hives,
dry lips.

Severe adverse effects are:

hearing impairment,
eye pain,
head pain,
vision impairment,
rectal hemorrhage,
bruises,
serious blistering,
pain in the bones.

If you note any serious adverse effects, stop the treatment and contact your doctor as soon as possible.

Way of use

Accutane must be taken with water to prevent the melting process occurring in the esophagus area in stomach. Avoid chewing the pill.
You can also take this drug with milk or during the meal.
Accutane must be taken for the period prescribed by your doctor.

Precautions

Patients using Accutane must follow the progress by visiting the doctor regularly.
Doing blood tests is necessary to find out if there are any undesirable effects.
Pregnant women must avoid taking Accutane because of the high risk of birth defects.

Important information

Don’t donate blood during the treatment.
This medicine not be taken by the patients with a history of mental and cardiovascular diseases, bone pain, stomach disease, diabetes, asthma, liver dysfunction or eating disorder.
Avoid performing any skin treatment, such as hair removal or tattoo during the treatment, as it may lead to scarring.
Try not to expose your skin to sun light or UV rays, as there is a high risk of sunburn.

Self-care

Accutane may lead to the severe birth defects. Therefore, it must not be used by pregnant women. During the treatment, women must take pregnancy test and use contraceptives.
