Arjuna also reduces the content of lipids in the blood, lowers the level of triglycerides, beta-lipoproteins, cholesterol, increases the synthesis of LDL-substance enhances the protective anticholesterol activity, removes cholesterol from the body.

Arjuna has been revered in Ayurveda since ancient times. The tree, reaching a height from 20 to 27 meters with light, lactiferous bark and pale green leaves, flowers in August-September and gives a fruit in November and December. It grows in the foothills of the Himalayas, Bihar, Bengal, Burma, Central and southern India and Sri Lanka. Bark, leaves and fruits are used for medical purposes.

Arjuna is a great heart tonic, containing a large number of loginovich and arganovich acids, sitosterol. The bark of the tree possesses anti-ischemic and cardioprotective protective action and is used in the treatment of hypertension, ischemic heart disease. It also has a good tonic effect in case of cirrhosis of the liver, normalizes arterial blood pressure, heart rate. Arjuna promotes tissue healing, stimulates blood circulation, strengthens the heart muscle, stops bleeding, helps with insomnia, relieves headaches, improves concentration.

Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) balances all three doshas – Kapha, Pitta and Vata. Virya ( the energy of plants) is cold (decreases activity of aputnik cells of the small intestine). Rasa (primary taste) is sweet-tart.

Ingredients of the drug

The bark of Arjuna contains tannins, including 15% of glucomanano acid, bioflavonoids, which have a strong antioxidant effect, glycosides, calcium carbonate and traces of alkaline chlorides. A careful study of D. Chopra and his team showed that Arjuna bark contains unusually large amounts of salts of calcium, some magnesium salts and aluminum, about 12% of pyrocatechin that strengthen the walls of blood vessels, organic acids, saponin, triterpenm which is responsible for the diuretic properties of the plant and phytosterols.

The bark is an astringent means, which stimulates the heart and has a toning effect. It is used in the treatment of bleeding and diarrhoea, dysentery and malabsorption syndrome, taking in the form of decoction (1 to 10) in the amount of 15-20 grams per day. Arjuna is useful in diseases of  liver, as an antidote (B. Powell) and in case of the bite of a scorpion.

Arjuna action

Ayurveda Arjuna has been used as a cardiac agent since ancient times. Vagbhata firstly described Arjuna bark as a tonic drug, which was cooked in the form of powder with milk and sweetened water. In case of a heart disease he recommended it in the form of ghrita (powdered bark mixed with ghee and honey). Doctors recommended formulations with Arjuna in a variety of cardiac diseases, including arthritis, myocarditis, and pericarditis. Arjuna was also used in case of skin diseases and traditionally to balance the doshas. In case of hemoptysis Charaka prescribed to take a powder from the bark of the Arjuna mixed with the same amount of powder of red sandalwood, cane juice and rice water. Externally the leaves of Arjuna have long been used in Ayurveda as an ointment for wounds and sores. Vagbhata recommended the use of an ointment of the bark mixed with honey to get rid of acne and other skin problems. Sushruta believes that in case of spermatorrhea it is better to use a usual decoction of a bark, mixed with white sandalwood; Kharita recommended that decoction in case of gonorrhea. It is also known that a bark of the plant, pounded to a state of fine powder and mixed with goat milk, stops bleeding, dysentery and ulcerative colitis. Arjuna contains substances that have an antiseptic effect, allowing using the herb for angina and other inflammatory diseases of the upper respiratory tract.

Clinical trials of drugs made on the basis of the extracts of Arjuna bark showed a positive effect on the heart muscle, strengthening an antioxidant effect on the endothelium, reducing the systolic (top) blood pressure in case of hypertension. It is also described that Arjuna has the tuning fork effect on the anahata-chakra (heart center) and heart meridian prana-sharira. The prabhave of Arjuna also includes its ability to stop bleeding, but under normal condition the body prevents increased thrombosis.

Indications: coronary heart disease, hypertension, arthritis, myocarditis, pericarditis, chronic bronchitis, liver cirrhosis, insomnia, headache, decreased concentration of attention, lethargy, dizziness

Dosage

Adults and children over 14 years take 1 capsule of the drug 2 times daily one hour before meal, drinking it with water. There should be an hour between taking “Arjuna” and allopathic drug.

The course of the drug treatment is 60 days.

According to Ayurvedic principles, in case of heart disease related to rheumatism, various forms of myocarditis and pericarditis, it is recommended to take the following decoction: 1 Tola (180 gram) of dense Arjuna bark, 2 Tola (360 grams) of cane sugar and 115 grams of milk. The bark should be well crushed, mixed with milk and honey and taken in the morning on an empty stomach. Regular and long-term (about a year) receipt of such funds will eliminate all signs of sickness. In case of fractures and contusions with extensive ecchymosis, the Arjuna bark is taken with milk, treacle or water as a means of promoting rapid fusion of bone and wound healing. In case of tuberculosis, the bark is crushed into fine powder, soaked in the juice of Adhatoda vasika leaves seven times in a row, then it is dried, mixed with honey and ghee and is taken as pasta. It is believed that Arjuna helps the body recover after surgical interventions.
