Description

In such a field of medicine as cardiology, doctors often resort to the help of the drug Calan. Indication for the use of this medication is treatment of angina pectoris, cardiac arrhythmia, hypertension. This drug belongs to the group of selective calcium channel blockers of the first class. According to many physicians, calcium antagonists reduce the likelihood of developing a stroke and heart attack much more efficiently than regular intake of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, beta-blockers and diuretics.

Role of calcium ions in the body

Calcium ions take part in many important processes in regulating of the vital activity of the human body. They activate the metabolism at the cellular level, increase the contractility of the heart muscle (myocardium), at the right moment narrow the lumen of the blood vessels, affect the conductivity of nerve impulses and perform many other functions. These substances penetrate the cell through specific calcium channels. They are also called “slow” channels. As a rule, with arterial hypertension and the development of cardiovascular diseases, there is a need to limit the intake of calcium ions into cells. For this purpose the “slow” calcium channel blocker Calan is used.

Pharmacological properties

By reducing the amount of calcium ions entering the body cells, this drug has a triple effect. First, Calan eliminates high blood pressure, lowering the muscle tone of the smooth muscles of peripheral blood vessels. Secondly, the drug dilates the coronary arteries, reducing myocardial contractility and its need for oxygen. Thirdly, this calcium antagonist normalizes the heart rhythm, affecting a certain part of the conduction system of the heart – the atrioventricular node. As a result, the normal (sinus) rhythm of the heart is restored. Moreover, the frequency of heart rate contractions decreases even during paroxysmal tachycardia. In addition, the drug improves cardiac activity, increasing the content of potassium in cells, and also prevents thrombosis by suppressing the adhesion (aggregation) of platelets in the circulatory system. Finally, this remedy has one more positive property: it does not cause drug dependence and addiction.

Indications

Calan is intended for the treatment and prevention of pathological conditions associated with disruption of the cardiovascular system. These ones include chronic coronary insufficiency, arterial hypertension, supraventricular extrasystole, flicker and atrial flutter, paroxysmal tachycardia. The drug showed itself at its best in the treatment of various types of angina pectoris – stable (tension), unstable and vasospastic (Prinzmetal stenocardia).

Conditions for admission

The duration of treatment and the dosage regimen of the drug Calan depend on the nature and severity of the disease, therefore they are established by the doctor individually for each patient. In particular, with hypertension, arrhythmia and angina, the initial single dose is 40 to 80 milligrams (three times a day), which, as necessary, can be increased to 120-160 milligrams.

Contraindications and side effects

Calan, like any medicine for “cores”, has many contraindications. First of all, they include acute myocardial infarction, constriction of the aortic aorta, heart block 2 – 3, porphyria, low blood pressure and heart rate less than 50 beats per minute. It is forbidden to take the drug with cardiogenic shock, digital intoxication, individual drug intolerance, in the first trimester of pregnancy and breastfeeding. The medicine is not intended for treatment of persons under the age of 18 years.

Of the side effects that Calan may cause, you should highlight dizziness, drowsiness, blockage, redness of the face, stool. Sometimes there are swelling, pain in the joints, there are allergic reactions (urticaria, skin rash).

The drug Calan, indications for the use of which are based on the blocking of calcium ions, is a significant achievement of pharmacology of the end of the last century. However, this medication should not be taken on its own. We must not forget that the heart is one of the main organs of man. Any unprofessional interference in his work can lead to serious consequences.
