The active substance of this medication is fluconazole. This drug is released in the form of capsules containing 150, 100 or 50 mg active ingredients, powder for suspension, 1 ml of which contains 10 or 40 mg of fluconazole, and also in the form of a solution for intravenous injection, 1 ml of which contains 2 mg of active substance. Auxiliary substances in the medication are: citric acid, silicon dioxide, sodium benzoate and titanium dioxide.

Once in the body the substance of fluconazole inhibits the cells of mold and yeast-like fungi that affect nails, hair and stratum corneum of the epidermis. In addition, the drug struggles with dimorphic fungi developing in a yeast or mold to form. The active substance is rapidly absorbed by the body, that’s why the highest blood concentration of this medication is reached in 30-60 minutes. And considering that the half-life of the drug is 30 hours, this medication should be taken just once a day. Thanks to the good permeability, the concentration of fluconazole in tissues and saliva is the same as its concentration in the blood. A little more of fluconazole is accumulated only by the stratum corneum of the skin.

You should be familiar with the indications for use of Diflucan. This drug is recommended for cryptococcosis, or cryptococcal infection, with the defeat of yeast infection of internal organs, genital or recurrent vaginal candidiasis, and candidiasis of the mucous membranes. In addition, Diflucan is suitable for the treatment of fungal infections of various localization, endemic mycosis and also for prevention of fungal diseases of individuals having a malignant tumor in the cases where radiation therapy causes the development of fungal infection.

Dosage

Speaking about the reception of Diflucan medication and its dosages, it should be noted that this drug in capsule form is used in various dosages, all depends on the nature and severity of the underlying disease, but often the medicine is taken at the dosage of 200 mg per day in one or two doses. In case of Candida infections you should take 400 mg of medicine on the first day and 200-300 mg of the drug on the following days. The duration of intake is prescribed by your doctor. In case of yeast infection this drug is used for two weeks at the dosage of 50 or 100 mg daily. Children take this drug at the rate of 3 mg of drug per kilogram of body weight.

Side effects

Considering the side effects that may occur while taking the drug, the instructions for use highlights such possible conditions as dizziness, nausea or vomiting, epigastric pain, violations of  liver and dyspepsia. In rare cases there was observed the development of hepatitis.

Drug Contradictions

These include an intolerance of fluconazole, and other substances in the composition of Diflucan, besides the simultaneous administration of this drug with cisapride or terfenadine. In addition, it is not recommended to take Diflucan during pregnancy or during breast-feeding.
