Doxycycline

Today, every person knows that the treatment of bacterial infections needs the use of antibiotics. So the shelves of modern pharmacies are filled with various antibacterial agents. This diversity is due to the fact that it is sometimes very difficult to find a really effective drug that has shown high activity against a pathogen. This is not surprising, because there are a great variety of bacteria in nature. Some infectious agents are sensitive to penicillin, the others are sensitive to fluoroquinolones, the third – to cephalosporins.

Description

Today, every person knows that the treatment of bacterial infections needs the use of antibiotics. So the shelves of modern pharmacies are filled with various antibacterial agents. This diversity is due to the fact that it is sometimes very difficult to find a really effective drug that has shown high activity against a pathogen. This is not surprising, because there are a great variety of bacteria in nature. Some infectious agents are sensitive to penicillin, the others are sensitive to fluoroquinolones, the third – to cephalosporins. We should not forget about another effective group of antibiotics, which is represented by doxycycline. The instruction attributes this medication to antibacterial agents from the category of tetracyclines with broad spectrum of antimicrobial action.

Bacteriostatic effect

The drug stops the growth of bacteria in their stage of growth and division, but it is ineffective against the microbes in the dormant state. Bacteriostatic effect is provided by the main operating component of doxycycline that breaks protein metabolism in the cell structures of pathogens, inhibits the reproduction of RNA which leads to suppression of vital activity of pathogenic microorganisms.

The antimicrobial effect of this drug of the tetracycline group extends to a number of infectious bacterial pathogens: Klebsiella, Shigella, Clostridium, Salmonella, staphylococci, streptococci, Neisseria, Pseudomonas and coliforms, enterobacteria. Also, this antibiotic shows high activity against the spirochetes, chlamydia, Rickettsia, mycoplasmas. Once in the digestive tract, doxycycline penetrates the plasma two hours later, then it is distributed to organs and tissues exposed to microbial defeat, and excreted in urine and feces by decomposing in the liver.

Indications for use

Doxycycline showed high efficiency in treating a wide spectrum of infectious diseases of bacterial origin. Urologists prescribe this medicine in case of urethritis, pyelonephritis, prostatitis, cystitis. Venereologists have successfully used medication for chlamydia, uncomplicated gonorrhoea, syphilis, ureaplasmosis, venereal limfogranulema. Therapists and ENT doctors use this antibiotic to treat bronchitis, pneumonia, tracheitis, sore throat, sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis. Gastroenterologists prescribe the drug in case of gastroenterocolitis, cholangitis, cholecystitis, cholera. In addition, the antibacterial agent is able to withstand brucellosis, whooping cough, malaria, Lyme disease, typhus, spotted fever.

The conditions for reception

This medication comes in the form of tablets, each one contains 100 milligrams of active ingredient. It is recommended to take a loading dose on the first days of treatment: 2 tablets twice a day. The dosage reduced by half on the following days: one tablet once a day. The therapeutic course usually lasts not more than 10 days.

Drug Contraindications

Doxycycline has a small list of contraindications comparing to many other antibacterial drugs. The drug is not prescribed for violation of liver and kidney, and pigment metabolism (porphyria), intolerance to tetracycline antibiotics during pregnancy and breastfeeding. You cannot use this drug in the treatment of children under 8 years of age.

Side effects

The drug is well tolerated by patients, but there are still side effects. The instruction of the drug indicates that sometimes the body can respond to an antibiotic by nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decrease in blood levels of leukocytes and platelets, loss of coordination, increased intracranial pressure. Also there have been cases of allergic reactions: urticaria, increased sensitivity of the skin to ultraviolet radiation, angioneurotic angioedema.

In conclusion, it should be noted that the recovery occurs very quickly by affecting bacteria which are sensitive to Doxycycline. Therefore, despite recent advances in antibacterial pharmacology, doctors have not forgotten about the tetracyclines, and still actively use them to combat many infectious and inflammatory diseases.
