What is Dutas and what is it used for?

Dutas is a medicine used for the treatment of difficulty urinating or urination frequency. By impeding the release of a hormone that may cause prostate enlargement (dihydrotestosterone), Dutas can increase the flow of urine and reduce the risk of the patient requiring a surgery. Some people use Dutas for the treatment of alopecia.

Precautions

To ensure the drug safety, you should stick to the doctor’s prescriptions. The drug must not be taken by pregnant or lactating women. Avoid taking Dutas if you have allergy to dutasteride, as it may cause adverse reactions.

Dutasteride belongs to the group of dual 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, which reduces the release of DHT to treat and relieve the symptoms of BPH in patients with an enlarged prostate. Moreover, it can be used for the treatment of alopecia and acts in the same way as finasteride (Propecia) to delay hair loss and regrow hair in male patients.

In patients with male pattern baldness, the drug prevent DHT from binding to hair follicles and making them smaller so that the hair falls out.

Dutasteride can be used only by the men over the age of 18, and it contraindicated to women or kids (especially pregnant women, as it can harm the fetus).

Can Dutasteride cause prostate cancer?

According to the clinical research of men at high risk of prostate cancer, patients using dutasteride were shown to have a severe form of prostate cancer more frequently than men who weren’t using the drug. Moreover, the research has revealed that the drug reduced the rate of prostate cancer for less severe tumors.

Dutasteride can affect the results of a blood test for prostate cancer. If you’re going to make this test, inform your doctor that you’re taking dutasteride to prevent the mistake in the test results.

Adverse effects

As any other drug, Dutasteride can cause adverse effects in some patients.

Common adverse effects include:

erectile dysfunction
reduced libido (sexual desire)
ejaculation problems
gynecomastia

Rare adverse effects include:

heart failure, breathing difficulty, extreme weakness and swelling in your extremities
hair loss

Adverse effects whose frequency is unknown:

depression
swelling of testicles

Dutasteride can cause an allergic response. Therefore, if you note any of these symptoms during the treatment, stop using it it and get medical help immediately:

skin rash
urticaria
face swelling

Certain drugs can react with Dutasteride and increase the risk of adverse effects. Inform your doctor before starting the treatment with Dutasteride if you’re taking any of these drugs:

alpha-blockers.
hypertension drugs
AIDS treatment
therapy for fungal infections
some antidepressants

Dutasteride must be used only by men. It is contraindicated to the women, kids or teenagers. Crushed capsules must not be taken by pregnant women, as the active component can be absorbed through the skin and affect the fetus. If your wife/girlfriend is pregnant, you should use contraceptives during sex, as Dutasteride can go through semen and affect the development of a male fetus.

Dutasteride can affect the fertility of the men. Dutasteride must not be taken by men with severe liver dysfunction.

Dutasteride can lead to gynaecomastia and breast tenderness. Consult your doctor if these symptoms persist, as it may indicate the breast cancer.

If you have allergy to peanuts or soya, avoid using Dutasteride as it may contain soya oil.
