This drug is mostly used for the treatment of Parkinson’s disease, as it increases the effect of L-DOPA chemicals that fight the illness. Emsam is the first transdermal patch with selegiline as a main active component. It consists of 3 layers: an outer layer, an adhesive layer and a release liner. The adhesive patch delivers the medicine through the skin to the blood.

Emsam transdermal patches come in 6, 9 or 12 mg dosage.

As Selegiline contains the same elements as some illicit drugs, it is a controlled substance in Japan which can be bought only on prescription.

Selegiline is not a controlled substance in the US, but needs a doctor’s prescription to get from a drug store.
