The medicine was approved by the Food and Drug Administration and is sold under the name Grifulvin V. This anti-fungal medicine has been produced from the strains of Penicillium griseofulvum and was isolated for the first time in the end of 1940s. It works by preventing the division of fungal cells and has turned out to be efficient only for dermatophytosis that affected large part of the body.

Use:

It is essential to use the medicine according to the doctor’s prescription and shake the bottle prior to using it. The drug must be taken by mouth with food containing some fat. The dose depends on the body weight for children and the duration of the treatment depends of the kind of the infection. Always take Grifulvin at equal intervals. It is essential to complete the full course of treatment and prevent the relapse of the infection.

Contraindications:

People with any allergies for foods or preservatives should take the drug with caution. The effect of the medicine on pregnant and lactating women is yet unknown. Grifulvin can react with some drugs such as desogestrel, drospirenone, Estradiol valerate, Ethynodiol diacetate, warfarin, Mestranol, Norethindrone etc. The medication must not be mixed with alcohol.
People who suffered from candidiasis, histoplasmosis, Sporotrichosis, Lupus must inform their doctor before using Grifulvin.

Essential information:

Grifulvin V may cause dizziness. This effect may be aggravated if you mix it with alcoholic drinks or certain drugs. Use the drug carefully. Avoid driving or engaging in any dangerous tasks until you know your reaction to the drug.

Don’t use Grifulvin V for the whole course of therapy. If you don’t, the drug may not cure your infection completely. The fungus may also become less sensitive to this or other drugs.
Avoid drinking during the treatment.

Grifulvin V can increase your photosensitivity. Avoid getting exposed to sun, until your reaction to the drug. Use a sunscreen or wear protective clothes if you have to go out for a long time.
It is essential to practice good hygiene during and after the treatment to avoid the recurrence of infection.

Hormonal birth control (like contraceptives) may not be as effective when you’re taking Grifulvin V. To avoid pregnancy, use an additional form of contraception (such as condoms).
Use an efficient means of contraception for half a year after the treatment with Grifulvin V.
Laborartory tests, such as complete blood cell counts, liver and kidney function, may be required during the treatment. These tests may be required to check your condition or prevent the adverse effects. Don’t skip any doctor and laboratory appointments.

Grifulvin V must be used very carefully in kids under the age of 3, as its safety in these kids is yet unknown.

Pregnancy and lactating: Don’t use the drug during pregnancy. Avoid getting pregnant while you’re using the drug. If you suspect pregnancy, inform your physician at once. If you’re lactating during the treatment, inform your doctor to prevent any possible risks to the newborn.
