Sumatriptan in an agonist for a certain kind of receptor (5-hydroxytryptamine1 receptor subtype), located in the cranial arteries and vessels of the dura mater. These receptors are responsible for vasoconstriction (the the narrowing of the blood vessels, which results in the reduction of blood flow to that body area). The drug increases this activity of the receptors. This provides the relief of migraine by decreasing the vascular inflammation. The receptors are located as well in the trigerminal nerve. Imitrex also affects them. This would explain the drug’s effectiveness in the treatment of cluster headaches.
