Pharmacological properties of the drug

It is non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent. The drug has pronounced analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, it decreases body fever. The main active ingredient of the drug inhibits the synthesis of the hormone prostaglandin during the absorption in the general blood stream; this hormone is an activator of pain and inflammation in the body.

The drug suppresses the process of gluing platelets to each other. The pill attenuates the severity of pain syndrome in the area of inflamed joints, swelling and stiffness of movements in the morning. The therapeutic effect develops by the end of the first week from the start of drug therapy.

Pregnancy of the 1st and 3rd trimester;

The period of breastfeeding.

Application method and dosage

Indocin tablets are administered orally. The drug should be taken after meals to avoid such irritating action on the mucous membrane of the digestive system. The drug should be better swallowed without chewing, washing down with necessary quantity of liquid.

Depending on the intensity of pain and severity of the inflammatory process, the daily dose is set by the technician according to the instructions, the pills should be taken as a whole, 3 times a day. The duration of treatment is not less than 7 days, therapy is sometimes extended to 28 days, depending on the diagnosis and individual characteristics of the patient.

Use in pregnancy and lactation.

Pills of Indocin are contraindicated to women in the first trimester of pregnancy. The basis for all the organs and systems of the future baby is formed at this stage, so the impact of any medication on the mother’s body is undesirable as it can cause birth defects.

In the second trimester of pregnancy this medicine may only be used under the supervision of a physician, in the case when benefit for the mother outweighs the potential complications to the fetus.

In the third trimester the use of Indocin is contraindicated, as the drug treatment may lead to disorders of the hematopoietic system of the unborn child and the risk of bleeding of women during childbirth.

The active ingredient of the tablets can be transferred with breast milk, therefore, it is advisable to interrupt Indocin lactation, during treatment.

Side effects

Patients with increased individual sensitivity may have side effects during the period of treatment:

From the digestive tract – stomach pain, nausea, exacerbation of chronic processes, vomiting, lack of appetite, diarrhea, flatulence, enlargement of the liver, violation of its functions;

From the nervous system – headaches, lethargy, irritability, drowsiness, dizziness, muscle weakness, tingling in limbs, parkinsonism;

From the vessels and the heart – change of blood pressure, swelling of lower extremity, palpitations, pain in the heart, cardiac arrhythmias, development of heart failure;

Allergic reactions – hives, skin rash, erythema, impaired respiratory function, allergic bronchial spasm, pulmonary edema, angioneurotic edema, anaphylactic shock;

From the urinary system – the appearance of protein in urine, interstitial nephritis, a violation of excretory functions of the kidneys, renal failure;

There are also vaginal bleeding, sweating, gynecomastia, sensitivity, and breast tenderness.
