The main active component of the drug is the statin atorvastatin. Atorvastatin impedes a certain enzyme that participate in the production of “bad” cholesterol, thereby decreasing the amount of cholesterol produced in your body. The medicine also makes your liver to process more cholesterol.

If you cholesterol has reduced, your doctor can advise you to take the lower dose. You must undergo regular check-ups and blood tests so that your doctor can monitor your health condition.

Never stop the treatment without your doctor’s approval, as it can increase your blood cholesterol and cause stroke or heart attack.

Lipitor for the treatment of Alzheimer

Clinical researches have shown that the cholesterol-induced production of a neurotoxin may cause the development of Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Therefore, by decreasing the release of cholesterol by taking a cholesterol-lowering statin, the production of this hormone may also decrease, slowing the development of AD.

In a clinical research, patients with minor to moderate Alzheimer received atorvastatin calcium or placebo. The research found that decreasing the circulation cholesterol levels improved the state of patients compared with placebo. But at the same time, this data, while encouraging aren’t statistically relevant. Researchers think that the results of the research are promising, but additional researches are necessary to find out the role of Lipitor in the treatment of Alzheimer’s.
