Indications for use of Prednisone

Prednisone is prescribed to patients in case of the following indications:

Ankylosing Spondylitis

Inflammatory changes of the spinal cord and membranes

Non-infectious arthritis

Edematous processes of the vertebrae and its structures

Osteoarthritis

Soreness in the spine

Injuries to the joints and nerves of the spine

Osteochondrosis

The lack of efficacy of the treatment of the spine with other drugs

Drug Contraindications

Prednisone is contraindicated in the following diseases:

Hypertension

The disease of Itsenko-Kushing

Allergy to the drug and its components

Tuberculosis

Jade

Pregnancy (especially before the 12thweek)

Lactation

The principle of action of Prednisone

Once in the systemic circulation, Prednisone is directed to diseased tissues, penetrates into specific receptors and triggers a series of chemical reactions. As a result, a patient has analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, anti-edematous and anti-toxic effect and also the drug helps strengthen and expedite the work of the other drugs used in the treatment of diseases of the spine.

Instructions for use of Prednisone

Prednisone should be taken orally as a whole and washed down with plenty of water. Originally, the drug should be taken at the dosage of 20-30 mg a day to achieve a therapeutic effect (improvement of the patient). Then you should gradually reduce dosage to 5-10 mg per day. In extreme cases, the initial dosage can be increased to 50-100 mg per day, and a maintaining dose is up to 15 mg per day. The maximum daily dosage is 100 mg, a single one is 15 mg.

Children are prescribed the drug depending upon the weight of the patient – 1-2 mg per kg per day, divided into 4-5 receptions. Maintaining dose is 300-600 mcg per kg per day.

The course of treatment is individual and varies from 1 week to several months. You may cancel the drug gradually by reducing the daily consumption.

Side effects of Prednisone

The most common side effects of Prednisone include:

Obesity

Brittle bones

Increased pilosis of female body

The menstrual cycle

Ulcers in the digestive tract

Increased concentration of sugar in blood

Sexual dysfunction

Adrenal insufficiency

If you notice such symptoms, you need to take symptomatic drugs, reduce the dosage of Prednisone or to cancel taking it.

There were no data on cases of drug overdose.

Special instructions

The drug can be administered during pregnancy only in extreme cases because there can be unpredictable effects on the development of the fetus. Breastfeeding must be abandoned during treatment with Prednisone.

Children from 3 years are prescribed the drug only under strict medical supervision and in extreme cases.

Alcohol does not affect the reception of Prednisone.
