Skelaxin

It provides fast relief from pain without any negative adverse effects. It is yet unknown how the medicine acts; it can’t directly affect the motor plate, striated muscle or the nerve fiber. Therefore, it doesn’t immediately relax strained muscles in patients. Its effect may be caused by its sedative properties.

Precautions and adverse effects

The drug contains Metaxalone. You must not take Skelaxin if you have allergy to this substance, suffer from liver/kidney dysfunction or anemia. Skelaxin may lead to sleepiness, vomiting, head pain, excitement and gastrointestinal disorder. Hematologic disorders, including hemolytic anemia and leukopenia may happen as well. It may also affect the immune system and lead to the hypersensitivity and rash. You must avoid drinking alcohol, as this drug can increase the effect of alcohol and other central nervous system depressants.

Metaxalone may cause mental or psychomotor retardation. Therefore, you must avoid driving or engaging in any activity that requires high concentration. Skelaxin may enhance general CNS depression if taken with meal, particularly in the older patients. Pay particular attention to such symptoms as mood swings, weakness, increased heartbeat and symptoms of infection. You must contact your physician if symptoms don’t go away, as you may require the dosage adjustment. It may take you several days to adapt to the new dose.

Dosage

The common dose of the drug for adults and kids older than 12, is one pill (800 mg) 2-3 times a day. This drug may be taken irrespective of the mealtime. But if you take it during the meal, it may increase the level of drug in plasma. This may increase the risk of adverse effects. You should take this drug without food. The drug dosage doesn’t depend on your weight/age. Don’t stop taking the drug without your doctor’s approval. Skelaxin is intended only for the short-term use.

Doctor’s advice

Take Skelaxin strictly according to the prescriptions. If you have any questions about the drug, ask your doctor or pharmacist. The daily dose must be divided into 2-3 intakes. Usually, the pill contains 800 mg of the active substance. The drug can be taken irrespective of the mealtime. If the medicine is taken with food, it may cause vertigo and sleepiness.

Precautions

Skelaxin must be taken according to the doctor’s prescriptions. An overdose of Skelaxin may have serious complications. The symptoms of overdose may include vertigo, breathing difficulty, sleepiness, sickness, etc. Never exceed the drug dose. If you have skipped the dose, just keep following your usual dosing schedule, but don’t take the skipped dose. Taking double doses at once is not recommended. The pregnant women and nursing mothers must refrain from Skelaxin, as this substance can get into the breast milk. Older patients must avoid taking this drug.
